Well, for the benefit of my friends in Israel I’II start by saying that first there’s no point to flying all the way to the United States especially to Vegas, because it’s one long street that you will walk twice at the most and no, the outlets there are not as good as in Phoenix. If you are planning a trip to the US and Vegas is just one stop on your way, it’s worth to visit it.
Second, don’t come to Vegas with children. You cannot send them alone to the pool like you would do in Israel, hence, you will not be able to drink or gamble, and if you do not like neither, why come to Vegas at all.
So as you understand I’m not a Vegas fan. Frankly before my mom’s visit in the US there was no chance in the world I would write a post about Vegas. Dima and I visited Vegas on the 4th of July.
He got a vacation from work, it is a four- hour- drive from Arizona, so we thought “why not?”
Retrospectively, there are many reasons why not:
– On holidays everything is more expensive, the shows and the hotels. The hotels in Vegas are quite cheap because they want you to come, sit at the casino all day long and spend money, so they make it so convenient for you just to get there and do it (even the alcohol is free when you sit and gamble), but not on holidays.
– It was hot as hell. I did not think it would be as hot and as dry as in Phoenix-but I was wrong. We could barely walk along the strip because it was so hot.
– The strip was crowded and busy. We don’t like crowded and overly toured places. And on the holiday it was even more crowded than Machaneh Yehuda market in Jerusalem on Friday.
– We went there for five days. If you are not an alcoholic or a compulsive gambler, there is nothing to do in Vegas for so long.
So, here are the suggestions:
do not to go to Vegas neither in the summer time nor on American holidays, two –three days are enough and if you want to have fun do not come with children.
When Mother wanted to go to Vegas I took a deep breath and said okay. To be honest, it was a truly corrective experience for me. The temperatures were fair when we were there, it was a weekday, so it was not too crowded and the prices were reasonable.
When we went there in July, we stayed at New York- New York hotel, which is a wonderful place but rather expensive and the rooms are not that unique. However, when we went with my mom I wanted to be close to New York- New York hotel, and to be at the beginning of the Strip. But I also wanted to pay less, after all, the entrance to all the hotels is free.
So we stayed at Excallibur, and we paid a funny price of $ 140 for two nights and parking and in a really surprising way the room was bigger and better than the one that we had in New York- New York.
So what should you do in Vegas?
First of all, shows. You must see shows and at least one of “Cirque de Soliel”. Their shows are pricey but definitely worth it. I was on several shows and I loved the most the performance “Mystere”.
The USA is generally not a culinary experience in my opinion, so when there is a place that serve tasty food, I really feel obligated to say: the restaurant “Gonzalez” in New York- New York hotel is great, the cheese enchiladas is a hoot, the meat tacos were delicious, and they have three different flavors of margarita (all amazing) and generally any dish you order in this restaurant will be tasty, so you should visit the place.
The obvious thing to do is to walk along the strip and see all the hotels – now, it’s not a short walk, it will take a minimum of two hours and you should put on comfortable shoes. Most of the hotels are designed according to their names: The Paris Hotel is inspired by Paris (the ceiling there will make you dizzy), New York New York is designed like the narrow streets of the NY city, the Statue of Liberty and so on.
At the Venice Hotel you can sail on a gondola. For the brave ones among you, at the New York Hotel there is a rollercoaster and this is the only hotel with a $ 5 blackjacks. At the Bellagio Hotel, there is a water fountain show every quarter of an hour and is worth seeing in the evening.
The Stratosphere Hotel, located at the end of the Strip (there is a free parking), has the tallest observation tower in the United States -356 meters high and it is recommended to climb to the top of the tower, where there is a breathtaking view overlooking the entire city. There are also quite frightening attractions that Dima was very excited about.
But if this is your first visit to the city (between you and me, there is no reason to be there more than once), just strolling through the hotels is a fun experience. Do not forget to check online for coupons before going on attractions; it can save you a lot of money.
Have a safe trip! Don’t drink or gamble too much 🙂 Want to add something? have a qustion? leave comment, like “At Nelly’s” at Facebook and follow me on instegram and save the post in Pinterest!
