Exercising has been a significant part of my daily routine for years. I love eating. I gain weight just by smelling food. So I realized that I had no choice and fell in love with exercising and specially with long runs. I’m used to the hills of Jerusalem, to the cold air at five in the morning- even in August. In Arizona there’s a constant feeling that someone up there is trying to cook us. And it is always hot. Always. There is no relief in the morning or evening, there is no cool breeze, maybe some muddy monsoon if you are lucky. And since we arrived in the US, I have not run in the morning, at least not like I used to.
After we got back from Vegas, I reached my limit. The amount of junk food we ate there was absolutely ridiculous. I did not find even one decent salad. I cook very healthy, almost without any oil, and I felt there that my body was signaling to me that “winter is coming”- ok all jokes aside I just felt bad. A week after Vegas I felt that my body was already shouting “Help” – the pants I brought from Israel were barely fitting and I felt that I had to do something drastic.
Like everything in life, everything is accurate and precise. A blog that I follow, posted by a hedonistit about the 21-day Detox by Hagar Shefer.
First I downloaded the ‘Detox 21 days’ app (which is valid in six languages), and I was slightly anxious, because I was sure that to be committed to specific menu, will make me lose the joy of life. The problem was not planning the meals, after all I always cook, or plan what to cook. I was afraid of the limitations of the menu. I’m not fond of diets and I was not prepared to be enslaved to one.
The more I read about this Detox, the more I realized it was not a diet. Detox is a kind of restart for the body, when the initial goal of the menu is to clean up the silent inflammation that occurs in our bodies. Reducing measurements and weight loss are (blessed) side effects of getting rid of the inflammation – and the menu is built accordingly. For example, tomatoes and eggplants are from Solanaceae vegetables and using them too often, will slow down the cleaning process. That is why we should consume them reasonably. Also, the Detox contains a lot of fat- however, after 21 days we can consume more food but we won’t gain weight. A lot of thought was put behind this detoxification program.
It is important to note that I’m neither a dietician nor a nutritionist.
So I joined the group on Facebook, and I saw that everyone praised the menu and the recipes and thought to myself: “Well, if everyone can- so can I”. The most surprising thing was that Dima volunteered, to join the process.
During the Detox process, you should avoid the following things:
Cereals – I do bake challahs from time to time, but in most of my recipes, like pancakes or broccoli mini quiche , I use whole wheat flour, But in this process we use neither. No pasta or rice- So no cereals at all.
White\ brown sugar and artificial sweeteners– for me it is a blessing. I’ve been trying to get Dima to stop drinking his morning coffee with sugar for a year now. In this context it is advisable to avoid caffeine consumption, but if you drink coffee, no more than one a day. Avoid any use of milk and dairy products, beef, pork and alcohol.
Before we started the Detox I bought a blender because smoothies are common meal in the menu. I bought Ninja Pro Blender, spesific one because its reviews were good, it is easy to clean and it’s not expensive.
I also bought digital weight scale because I need to eat priceis amount of protein every day.
At the beginning of the Detox the body undergoes a healing crisis. Getting rid of all the unhealthy food that our body has consumed over the years is not easy. Some common side effects that are likely to appear are: headaches, exhaustion, weakness, nausea, bloating – but all of these will pass within few days.
So Who wants to join me?
