Detox 21: The End and Homemade Granola Bars

A while ago we finished Hagar Shefer’s 21-day Detox. I haven’t managed to write about that till now because we were in Flagstaff and then we celebrated Rosh Hashanah, and all kinds of stuff got in my way. But it was important for me to write how this fascinating journey ended. Why do I call it a fascinating journey? Because we have changed habits, tastes, enjoyed  the process that we thought would really be difficult, and we learned quite a bit about what makes our body feel good and what doesn’t.
The detox results:
Beyond the detoxification and rejuvenation of the body, this process has blessed side effects of weight loss.
Dima has lost 15.5 pounds!! That’s a great result!!
I have lost 3 pounds and  that’s fine – not great, but fine 🙂
After the Detox I downloaded the “Clean Eating” app, an app that contains another 220 wonderful recipes by Hagar Shefer, all of which are of course pure clean, healthy food.
Detox 21: The End and Homemade Granola Bars
We finished the Detox towards the end of August, and we have been eating clean still.
Dima has already lost 22 pounds in a month and a half – and before you think it is too fast and it is not healthy I want to tell you that we eat everything!! Although white flour and sugar are no longer  part of my kitchen, eating one slice of pizza once a week wouldn’t kill us. Just like eating salad once a week, will not make you lose weight, one slice of pizza won’t make you gain weight.
Dima’s body just needed a little push to help him lose weight, especially since he had been eating balanced and healthy food before, but the Detox actually caused a tremendous change that proceeded in losing weight.
Before we started the Detox, I had thought I was cooking and eating healthy – but after the Detox I understood that I could do so much more!!
Dima still drinks the Detox smoothies for breakfast in the mornings, I began to bake bread at home, instead of buying a bread filled with preservatives, every recipe that contains sugar I replace with honey or maple, and because Dima feels so great, he is motivated to come with me to the gym, and beyond all this, I learned a lot!
It takes some time to organize everything around the Detox  and it is not simple- but possible. Grocery shopping, cooking and all the preparation to make sure you always have the right things to eat, and to take to work. You can prepare more of each recipe so you would have food for few days. And in general, there is no such thing as “I do not have time” – a friend of mine did the Detox while maneuvering between a full-time job and two toddlers told me: “the busiest people are the ones who do the most” and that’s right! Only willpower and proper planning of things are needed.
As far as recipes are concerned, the applications have given me mainly ideas for the sweet and the snacks. I’ve already written about the apple chips here, and every other recipe of sweet snacks I’ve tried, was wonderful! I do not bake cakes at home, as far as I’m concerned, it’s a big obstacle sitting in the fridge and screaming “eat me!!”. Hagar’s sweet little snacks are just so pampering and you do not feel bad eating them because of their healthy value!
So the next recipe is for granola bars! A while ago I bought granola bars and today I give them away to my FEDEX or UPS delivery guys, whom by the way are shocked, because it is not acceptable here to offer delivery\ repair guys  something to drink  or light snacks, and they always look at me suspiciously as if I’m going to rape them myself.

Print Recipe
Serves: 12- 15 Cooking Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 12 dates
  • 1.5 of cup oatmeal
  • 1/4 cup of real maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup of almond butter/ peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons of chia seeds (optional)
  • Half a cup of nuts / almonds / dry cranberries without sugar

Instructions

1

Sprinkle the oatmeal on a baking sheet and bake for 5 minutes in the oven at 355F°.

2

In a food processor (I use a blender), grind the dates (without the seeds of course) with the maple, and the almond butter.

3

Move the mixture to a bowl and add the roasted oatmeal, the chia seeds and the nuts, and mix well.

4

Flatten the mixture on baking sheet; I do this with a rolling pin (that I wet under the water) and transfer it to a baking pan.

5

Gently make slots the size you want with a knife- it will be easy at the end of baking to cut them.

6

Bake the snack at 355F°for about 10 minutes.

7

After cooling you can cut the snacks.
